Kwik Trip EV Charging Station with Canopy
Albert Lea, MN · near Albert Lea Muni (0.4 mi)
What this outcome means
The FAA studied the proposal and concluded it would not be a hazard to air navigation. A no-hazard determination is not permanent — it carries an expiration date, and if the structure is not built by then the case has to be re-filed.
The proposal, in the filer's words
"Kwik Trip proposes the installation of a full NEVI-enabled Konect charging system providing a maximum of 600kW across four total chargers. The project location and site details can be found throughout the attached maps in the Appendix with clear site delineation in the Overall Site Plan. \n In addition to the chargers Kwik Trip proposes to do the following: \n • Install one designated EV stall for each charger (four total) each with EV pavement markings. Two of these stalls will be ADA-compliant stalls to accommodate all types of EVs. \n • Install a 20-foot by 45-foot canopy above the proposed chargers and stalls. Canopy height is expected to be 16 feet above the ground with excavation 48 in. deep for canopy foundations. \n • Install a pad-mounted electrical utility transformer. The transformer will require the addition of switchgear conduit and wiring to the site. Freeborn Mower Electric Cooperative—the location’s energy provider—has confirmed their ability to provide these upgrades. \n • Install wayfinding signage directing divers to the chargers. \n • Install switchgear with precast concrete foundation. \n • Construct deterrent bollards to protect the chargers from vehicle collisions. \n • Place trash can recycling and squeegee station atop a concrete pad. \n • Install a fire extinguisher and cabinet. \n • Install a security camera. \n • Excavate 1 200 sq ft of material with a maximum depth of 36 in. for conduit. \n \n The proposed transformer will require an estimated 1 200 square feet of material will be excavated for conduits to be installed 31 inches below grade for a full excavation depth of 35 to 36 inches. Foundations for the proposed canopy will require excavation approximately 48 inches below work. All other work will be aboveground on preexisting paved asphalt on Kwik Trip owned property. The proposed action will take place on the southern portion of the property adjacent to the property boundary separating it from an automotive dealership. Just north of this aboveground work will be an area of excavation to install conduits for chargers and directional bore feeders from Freeborn Mower Electric Cooperative."

Screening a structure of your own?
Check Part 77 and the tower's line of sight before you file
LOS Analyzer screens a proposed structure against FAA Part 77 surfaces and the control tower's sightline to the runway, terrain-aware, in minutes. It is a preliminary screening — not an FAA determination and not a substitute for a licensed engineering review.
