Data brief

FAA filings 2026 so far

LOS Analyzer's analysis of FAA OE/AAA filing records: the off-airport Part 77 notices entered January 1 – September 11, 2026, against the same days of 2025. By structure type, state and sponsor, plus where wind-turbine cases stand.

Government shutdown. On October 1, 2026 the FAA's OE/AAA portal showed a banner reading "Due to the government shutdown the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is unable to accept any new notices under 14 CFR Part 77." The figures here end with the archive of September 12, 2026, before the shutdown. When this page is updated, October's counts will reflect the shutdown, not the market.

The latest weeks are still filling in. Notices reach the FAA's public archive weeks after the FAA enters them: 2,299 of the 7,878 notices entered August 1–21, 2026 (29%) first appeared in the archive of September 12, 2026, not the one of August 22, 2026. So 2026's most recent months will rise, while 2025 is complete. Every comparison below is also given for January–June, which the archive has had time to fill in.

1. Notices entered, month by month

117,253 notices were entered January 1 – September 11, 2026, against 111,652 on the same days of 2025 (+5.0%). January to June, which the archive has had months to fill in, is up 14.2%. The latest months run below last year's partly because the archive is still catching up. The last column of the table shows how many of each month's 2026 notices first appeared in the newest archive.

2. By structure type

Each structure type is compared both ways: over the "so far" window, and over January–June, which the archive has had time to fill in. Where the two disagree, the January–June figure is the steadier read.

Approximate: a group counts sponsor names that match a simple rule (for example, the name contains "Crown Castle"; the rules are in the CSV), so affiliates filing under other names are not counted. The FAA withholds a sponsor's name while a case is under review, so recent 2026 filings are unnamed until they are determined and these 2026 counts will rise. Organisations only. Wind turbines

New wind-turbine notices: 12,118 so far in 2026, against 14,271 (−15.1%); −5.4% for January–June. No wind-turbine case has a completion date in August 2026, against 256 in August 2025. Crane and antenna-tower cases with a completion date that month: 2,199 and 1,202.

34,817 wind-turbine cases filed since January 1, 2024 are still listed as under review. Of the turbines filed January–June 2026, 84.0% had no completion date by September 11, 2026; the table below gives the same measure for earlier years.

FAA records do not say why a case is open or closed. Each notice is one turbine position, and some open filings may be layouts that were later superseded.

Methodology and caveats

Source. The FAA's Obstruction Evaluation / Airport Airspace Analysis (OE/AAA) public archive, as published on September 12, 2026. These are LOS Analyzer's counts of the FAA's filing records, not figures the FAA publishes, and the FAA has not reviewed them. The FAA provides the archive "as is".

What is counted. Off-airport Part 77 notices (14 CFR Part 77, Subpart B), by the date the FAA entered them. A notice is a proposal to build or alter something, not a structure that was built, and one project can file many notices: one per turbine, crane or tower position.

"So far." January 1, 2026 to September 11, 2026, the last full day in the archive, compared with January 1, 2025 to September 11, 2025. Notices reach the public archive weeks after they are entered, so 2026's latest weeks are incomplete and 2025's are not. That makes 2026's "so far" totals a floor; the January–June comparisons are the steadier read.

Government shutdown. The archive behind this page predates the government shutdown: from October 1, 2026 the FAA's OE/AAA portal showed a banner saying the FAA could not accept new Part 77 notices. October counts will reflect that, not demand.

Structure types are LOS Analyzer's grouping of the FAA's free-text structure-type field, so the category boundaries are ours. Nearest airport is the airport named on the notice.

Sponsor groups match the sponsor name on the record against a simple rule, so they are approximate. The FAA withholds a sponsor's name while a case is under review, so recent filings carry no name yet.

Cases closed counts cases by their completion date, whatever the outcome. Under review is the case status in this archive. FAA records do not say why a case is open, and some open filings may be superseded layouts. Expiring determinations counts "No Hazard" determinations by their expiration date; it does not know whether the crane has already been used.

Names. Totals include every notice, because a count names no one. The only organisations named here are sponsor groups and the sponsors of the tallest crane notices, and those come from organisation-sponsored notices only. No table names a representative, and the CSVs hold aggregates only.

Corrections. If a figure here looks wrong to you, email support@idea-engine.studio and we will check the query and publish a correction.

Why we built this

We read this archive because we screen structures against it

LOS Analyzer checks a proposed structure against FAA Part 77 surfaces and the control tower's line of sight to the runway, terrain-aware, before you file. It is a preliminary screening, not an FAA determination and not a substitute for a licensed engineering review. For the longer view, read The State of FAA Obstruction Filings.
